Do you have a hard time knowing what to celebrate, don’t think to celebrate, or don’t even know how to celebrate? Here’s a reliable gauge: until further notice, celebrate everything! Time & time again, I hear coaching clients wanting to wait until they’ve earned it.
The fault in “I’ll be happy when” thinking is – What if the when never comes?
Especially right now when so many people are staying home more or not even going out. When some companies are laying off or have a freeze on hiring right now. What if you were waiting for your next promotion, or a new relationship before you’re willing to celebrate your good stuff?

Don’t wait for the feeling of happiness to celebrate
I know for sure that you should never wait to feel happy to celebrate. Celebrating, especially small things, helps bring happiness.
Until further notice, celebrate everything
So many people focus on their end goal and overlook the importance of the path that they took to get there (caught in their focused strive towards betterment thinking, “I’ll be happy when.” instead
What if the when part of “I’ll be happy when” never happens?
Next goal -> achievement -> next goal -> achievement-> next ->next ->next -> always a next!
Linear thinking like this catches you in an annoying loop of a head-down push forward mentality.

Sprinkling small celebrations or creative pursuits can lead to enjoying the journey rather than the end goal. Pausing on your journey can lead you to more satisfaction and daily fulfillment.
Allow room for things that take you away from your pursuits
One of my favourite parts of Elizabeth Gilbert’s book Big Magic is the story of Australian Writer Clive James. Gilbert mentions that during a dry spell, James’ daughters asked him to paint their bikes.
He painted them, red, then frosted the spokes, put stripes on the seats, and then painted stars all over the bikes. From there he painted stars on other kids’ bikes – and it repeated – over and over again.
Can you see how a creative path or creative play can enhance your life rather than detract from your goals?
By doing something else – and by doing it with all his heart – he had tricked his way out of the hell of inertia and straight back into the Big Magic.

There is magic in the pauses and the celebrations of your journey. Regardless if you’re on a path of achievement or towards awakening, this one little tact of celebrating everything will add life and vigor to your goals. Let the excitement of purposeful living lead you to your next growth destination.
- Celebrate your effort.
- Celebrate finally deciding to stop fence-sitting on an idea.
- Celebrate being in a creative flow.
- Celebrate gaining awareness.
- Celebrate signs from the universe that you are in sync.
- Celebrate your journey, the moments, memories, and milestones that matter.
- Celebrate a breakthrough. Even if it brought tears, especially if it brought tears, gift yourself kindness by being gentle with yourself.
- Celebrate your rituals and routines.
- If you’re a writer, celebrate the time spent sitting your butt in the chair.
- If you’re an artist, celebrate time in front of the easel.
- If you’re tired, celebrate by pausing and finding rest.
- Every day, possibly every moment is reason enough to celebrate.

- Glittery things
- Hobby supplies
- Pausing to enjoy (anything)
- Dinner in or out
- Dancing (even in your kitchen)
- Connecting with people that fill you up
- Solitude
- Guilt-free spare time

Do what’s meaningful to you
Celebrating doesn’t just have to be big wins & dinners out.
Small, significant things bring great joy. Celebrate You!
Try out a couple of things: Something simple, plus something that feels indulgent or shiny.
Some of the most indulging things can be simple acts that bring you joy or coziness.
Going through something fierce? – Celebrate your breakthroughs or effort by giving yourself grace.
You are doing the best you can at the moment and deserve to go easy on you.
Have great people around you
Surround yourself with good people. People that have your back and cheer you on.
Let’s hear from you.
- What’s your thing? Your small Joy Triggers?
- Are you fair to yourself, or holding back for later?
- Do you treat yourself as well as others?
- What was the last thing you celebrated about/for yourself?
- What do you need to celebrate that you haven’t been able to yet?
- What’s the next celebration you are going to do to celebrate?
- How are you going to celebrate?
- Who are you accountable to for doing it? (e.g. a celebration buddy, friend, or coach)
- What other reasons and ways to celebrate do you use?
Most of all, through this life journey, be there for yourself. Allow yourself baby steps and the use of training wheels when trying out new skills. Go easy on yourself!
