Spirituality Matters Secrets – You Can’t Hack Your Way To Mindfulness

Connecting with your spirituality is about getting comfortable with yourself and the way you interact with the universe. It’s much more than just believing wholeheartedly in a system outside of yourself. Faith and hope also play into it.

Your Spiritual Connection

How connected do you feel to your spirituality? On a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being the most connected you could possibly be), where do you place yourself currently? Where do you want to be?

The further within myself I go,
the farther out to the world I can reach.

~ Charles Tirapantu

Why Spirituality Matters

When you feel connected to your spirituality, you gain awareness and confidence in the fact that you are not alone in the world. Even if you’re sitting alone in a dark room, tapping into universal connectedness allows you to use the strength and wisdom of consciousness.

You are a spoke in the wheel and at the same time, connected to all the other spokes with full access to the power of the wheel.

Draw upon that strength

You are not a drop in the oceanyou are the entire ocean in a drop.”

~ Rumi

Anything is possible. You are a divine source, and you are where you are. You are enough.

Connecting with your spirituality

There are many ways to start connecting with your spirituality. Here are a few initial ideas. This is a choose-your-own-adventure project, so start where you want and where it feels right.

Meditation

If you’ve already tried to meditate and it just doesn’t work, start small. Set a timer for 1-3 minutes, close your eyes, and listen to your breath. If you get distracted, it’s okay.

As soon as you realize your mind has wandered, gently bring your attention back to your breathing. Repeat this basic meditation technique for 11 days, then reassess. Mindfulness is not something you can hack. Meditation is the closest thing to hacking it.

Until recently, I thought of meditation as the exclusive province of bearded swamis, unwashed hippies, and fans of John Tesh music.

Intuition

Tune into your intuition by pausing and allowing space to listen to your body. Determine how an activity or thought feels to you. While you’re doing something, ask yourself “Does this feel expansive or constrictive to me?”

Start to get comfortable with tapping into your body to see how it feels. Ask yourself “Where in my body am I feeling this?” and “How does it feel?”

Once you know that your left shoulder aches when something is draining you, you’ll be able to pick up on your intuitive hits in everyday life. The next time that left shoulder starts to tense up, ask yourself “What’s going on around me right now? What is my body trying to tell me?”

Prayer

Feel free to skip this section if prayer is not for you. Who you pray to is up to you based on your own beliefs and values.

If you want to pray but don’t know how – start with an open-ended conversation.

When in doubt, just pray, “Please walk with me.” <- This is my go-to prayer.

Just start

There is no wrong way to start connecting to your spirituality. Wherever you are, pause and allow space for solitude and peace to get in.

Do healthy things that feel right for you. Your spirituality is so much more than just choosing a belief system. It’s about your connection to self and your community, listening to your own guidance and instincts, and understanding and respecting your values.

Knowing yourself and the alignment of your soul, mind, and body allows you to be in flow. Begin with kindness to yourself, understanding, and caring.

Start by monitoring what you say to yourself, then challenge it. If you wouldn’t talk to a friend, a child, or your grandmother like that, why would you accept it as okay for your own self-talk?

Allow unfolding

Let yourself unfold. Stop slamming doors of possibilities shut.

Practice replacing your Nos and Shoulds and Shoudn’ts that you say to yourself with What Ifs and Can You Imagines

Just imagine what 11 days of self-kindness could do for you!

What a beautiful gift to give yourself.

Your Turn – please share your thoughts

I’d love to hear from you. Do any of these steps sound doable to you? What’s one small action you can put into practice today?
